Mama mia! My favourite childhood game gets a movie and it was lit.

When the trailer for the Super Mario movie went live many months ago, people immediately hated on Chris Pratt’s Italian accent. The hate was so vicious, they threatened to boycott the movie if and when it came out. This had many people worried about the box office numbers. Well, turn outs it was all bark and no bite as the Super Mario movie has already grossed over $1 billion in box office. Why wouldn’t it?

Many times game adaptations don’t go as planned and the directors end up messing things up, but not this time. The directors and storytellers did an amazing job. It was a masterpiece and a great homage to the game that won our hearts. Every element from the game was represented to the fullest. The trials Mario had to face to impress the princess were a replica of the ones we had to get to the princess in the game. What about food? The toad community was beautifully represented, too. I mean, no detail was left out. The hammer turtles, star, Luigi and his green, the awesome power-boosting yellow star, the green tunnels. It was awesome.

The Storyline

Aside from the on-point details in the movie, the story line made a whole lot of sense. Normally when we play the game, we have both brothers trying to save the princess from the dragon, but here we have the princess doing her best to defend the people who raised her to be their leader. The dragon was the most delusional creature. I laughed out loud when I realised he wanted to marry the princess and rule together. What a dreamer! One cool part was when he changed the piano tunes to the exact Super Mario theme song that signifies danger.

This isn’t Chris Pratt’s first animation rodeo as you will recall he was the voice of Emmet from The Lego Movie. I feel people just want to hate on him, but no matter how much hate there is, it doesn’t take away the fact he is an amazing voice-over actor. He shines always. The entire cast did a great job. And Jack Black? Underrated is the word that comes to mind when I think of Jack Black. He takes up any personality anyday and you’ll need to check the cast to know it’s him. Seth was also hilarious as DK and his love/hate relationship with Mario was cute to watch.

I’m rewatching the movie again. That’s how good it was and I hope you enjoy it. If you’re not familiar with the game and also not a fan of animation, you won’t get it. But if you are, you know this was a 10/10 movie by all standards.
