What a movie!

What happens when you put a hedgehog, a fox and an echidna together? A team.

Via Google

Not many movies can successfully pull off a sequel that not only delivers better than its prequel but also dishes a storyline that is fun and entertaining.

Well, Sonic 2 did just that for me with the introduction of new characters, plot twists and a tease for a possible third part.

Movie Plot

It’s been two years since we saw Sonic settle in with Doughnut Lord and his wife and things have been pretty good, except Sonic wants to do more for the people with his gifts.

Every night he sneaks off to Seattle to fight crime and returns exhausted.

His superhero gimmick is interrupted by the return of Robotnik and a new arch-nemesis — Knuckle.

I’m so excited writing this and my thoughts are all over the place at the same time, but I’ll try to focus on it.

Sonic

Via Google

My beautiful blue devil is back with some fun mischief as he tries to be better and use his powers for good.

We all need to take a moment and appreciate his insights. Imagine if he didn’t want to do good and instead wanted to do bad.

Yikes!

We might need the Flash to get him under control, don’t you think? But anyhoo, his decoy tape and farts sound scores an A for ingenuity. Schwartz, as usual, nailed his voice over. You could feel the emotion in his voice when he talked and just walked with him as he did his best to send his message across.

Way to go with the set-up!

Robotnik

Via Google

Only Robotnik would turn a desolate mushroom-based planet into a working model. You have to give it to him. The man is smart and knows what he wants — the trap, the trial and error with the coffee — it was pretty neat.

Carrey came back crazier than in the first part and I was loving every part of it. His eccentric character brought Robotnik to life again and gave it that added craziness you would expect from someone who’s been in isolation for up to 300 days.

So my massively metacarpal friend.

I still can’t place my mind on what he manifested with the emerald. Was it a living, breathing digital computer that can teleport and manipulate matter? Still thinking about that one.

Leave it to Carrey to form a special number while being mean.

New Characters

Knuckles

Via Google

New characters are always something to look out for, but then the introduction to the character could either make or mar a character. For Knuckles, his introduction was menacingly good.

I will shatter them like the bones of a fallen…oh, they are stairs.

🤣🤣

The zoom on his knuckles as he stepped through the portal asking about the blue quill was so deliciously good.

Do I look like I need your power?

Oh, dear! Idris Elba absolutely brought Knuckles to life. He had the right blend of meanness and imbecility to pull off a traditionally trained animal that is trying to blend into the new age.

Oh, Knuckles my darling.

I liked how he looked so diabolical and menacing.

You’re unskilled, untrained, and unworthy.

Lines, mehn.

I was wondering how he got hold of Sonic’s presence with Long Claw since he didn’t go to war. But I realized he must have asked questions since his entire clan had never returned home.

The fact Knuckles is so strong and can catch Sonic in midair made the whole thing realistic. A villain that’s really out to get his revenge.

Via Google

Dot.dot.dot.dot dot.

I thought it would never end.

I noticed the honourable part of Knuckle when he asked where the “minion” would sit and, on hearing Robotnik’s reply, replied “dishonour.”

I can’t even fault him again. He did what he felt he had to do to avenge his clan and make things right but was far too gullible in calling Robotnik a friend.

Tails

Via Google

Am I the only one who thinks Tails is such a cute baby? I so love the double tails and how it turns into a buttcopter when it needs to. For someone whose clan disliked it because it was weird, I think it is pretty unique.

Do you trust me?

Of course not. I literally just met you.

A very realistic answer if you ask me. Many adults would nod yes, but not Sonic.

You’re so heavy.

That’s because I’m 100% muscle.

Knuckles please already.😂🤣🤣

I like how Tails isn’t just cute but very handy with flight and smartness. Its gadgets are pretty useful in a fight, and with time, its confidence will grow. But that itsy part about watching Sonic have a bubble bath did make me raise an eyebrow.

Robotnik’s Assistance

Via Google

What a loyal compatriot. Man was missing his boss so badly he drew coffee images of him.

I can’t imagine that kind of dedication to someone who hardly gives a shit about your existence.

Stockholm, maybe?

I want the emerald. I just need it for a day or two and I’ll return it. I promise.

Why do they keep shaking Knuckles? Isn’t it obvious he has a firm grip? C’mon already. His name is Knuckles!

The comedy and lines in this movie had me rolling.

Seems the owls and echidnas have been fighting each other for centuries.

Like Vin Diesel and The Rock.

I’m honestly worried about that joke. I laughed hard, but I’m still worried about it.

It’s like Professor X meets monopoly man.”

Another crazy line from Sonic to Robotnik. Their batters were captivatingly fun.

Oh great! The winter soldier.

I can’t have enough. Come to think of it, he did have the brooding nature of Bucky Barnes.

Operation Catfish

There are limits to undercover jobs, please. Really? A full-on fake wedding.

Don’t even get me started on the fact she was sincerely looking forward to their life together.

The relationship started after Sonic saved his hometown and with Robotnik’s calculation, that’s roughly 300 days. Almost a year.

Don’t get me wrong. I know spies do crazier things than fake a marriage, but there must have been other ways to get what they wanted.

In my opinion, it wasn’t worth it.

I just knew the wedding would be a disaster. Didn’t see the double agent thing, though. Randal didn’t do well at all.

Operation catfish my foot.

Oh, and leave it to Doughnut Lord to accidentally switch rings during a magic show or try to correct Robotnik on the name.

The jungle theme was really spot on with the traps. I think I’ve seen the waterfall in another movie, but I can’t place it. It reminds me of The Mummy. But instead of sand, we had the temple in the middle of the sea.

Work smarter, not harder.

No truer words Dr Robitnik. No truer words.

The Fight Scene

Via Google

I don’t want to go crazy and call this the best part of the movie but my gosh was it electrifying.

The first fight scene caught Sonic off guard, of course, but the second one. Geez!

It was crazy. Blue and red lights going at each other at lightning speed. Every man for himself, fighting for what they believe in.

Will he lose the quill to live?”

Robotnik the commentator.

Why don’t you stand still and die with honour?

Sorry, honey. It doesn’t work that way.

The reconciliation on the beach was cute. Sonic was throwing medium sand balls at Knuckles, but Knuckles threw a tipper of sand at him.

Supporting Characters

The supporting characters did well. I do feel bad for Racheal. Sonic has in one way or the other affected her life, but I sense things would get better with Randall.

I laughed when Randall thought they had shot him and was fading away.😂🤣🤣

You’re lying on our ice sculpting.

Only Sonic would use his powers to summon an ultra golden hotdog. I almost thought we had lost him, but seeing him use all that tornado to get a hot dog just solidified the fact that we are never losing him.

Knuckles testified to it, too.

Phew! This has gone on for a while now. I warned you that I was excited about this.

My four cents

I’ve already given every two cents I can give writing this review, so let’s try four. When I watched the first part two years ago, I didn’t know what angle they were going to focus on two.

After watching 2, I love it.

Honestly, they did wonderful with 2. It was hilarious, fun and playful and still entertaining.

Knuckles sold it for me. He is such a human adult child animal that you just can’t help but laugh when he talks with a mean tone but means well.

I also love the bond between Doughnut Lord and Sonic, and the dad part had me mushy on the inside.

Not only does Sonic now have family, but he also has compatriots that look like him — not physically anyway — and he can form good memories with them.

I wonder if they’ll all fit in Sonic’s room. Hmm

Earth is a place that accepts strangers with open arms and lets them stay.

Sure thing, Sonic.

I foresee a very interesting relationship between those three and I hope for all our sake that they can defeat Shadow because mehn, it did not look like it’s coming for a joke.

Rating: You better go watch it right now. I mean right this minute.
