Movie Review: Rosaline
Turns out we would have had a Romeo and Rosaline had fates not intervened.
Rosaline is a comedic take on the classic Shakespearean tale of Romeo and Juliet. It’s a tale from the jilted ex, Rosaline, and how she and Dario were the real heroes.
I was stoked when I found this trailer and laughed way too hard.
Apparently, Juliet wasn’t the first Capulet Romeo professed his feelings for. After declaring his intentions and uttering those cute three words: I love you, the duo agree to meet at a ball. With Rosaline’s father on her neck to marry and the duo relationship being hidden, she embarks on a boat cruise with Dario thereby missing their meeting. This creates an opportunity to meet Juliet (Isabella Merced) and the rest is almost like you know it.
The Ex
Rosaline was a clown. I had expected she would at least smile at how handsome Dario was, but nope. She was as stubborn as a mule. And the bar scene where he spoke French to her was both romantic and funny.
I loved how unseriously serious the movie was. The love story between Rosaline and Dario was what I wanted to see, but I had to make do with a kiss at the end.
The Lovebirds
Before this movie, I’ve always maintained that Romeo and Juliet felt such intense love for one another because of the circumstances surrounding their affair. Hear me out.
There’s always a sense of adventure and safe danger with hidden desires and this was present in their relationship. They would speak and long for each other because they knew they couldn’t have each other. In the real world, they may not have even lasted long. They died at the peak of their love letting us believe it would have been everlasting.
Well, Rosaline gave a more realistic take. After the ploy to get their families to settle works, Rosaline and Dario help them escape.
The boat ride is the most awkward thing ever. They had nothing to talk about, and didn’t even know anything about each other.😂🤣🤣
Oh, and when she adds, “only six hours to go,” and he responds, “then it’s the rest of our lives.”
I wonder if they’ll make it work.
I enjoyed this. If you didn’t like how Romeo and Juliet ended, watch this instead and laugh away your sadness.
